Kyle Gilman

Kyle Gilman is a filmmaker from western Massachusetts, who studied in eastern Massachusetts, then moved to New York City.  For several years, he was manager of Possible Films, the production and distribution company created by Hal Hartley.  Gilman worked on the production of The Girl From Monday and Fay Grim; while working on the latter title, he lived in Berlin, Germany.

Gilman has written and directed several disturbing short films, which some call deadpan comedies.  Many feature Kyle Gilman, or someone very much like Kyle Gilman, obsessively pursuing a young woman named Jennie.  "Camera Noise," "The Epic Tale of Kalesius and Clotho: A Meditation on the Impossibility of Romantic Love in a Rapidly Expanding Universe," "Getting Laid Tonight," and "Two Night Stand" reveal a superb and subtle grasp of irony and comedic form.

Gilman has also created several pieces of internet art.*  The online video series,
Truth @ 15 Frames Per Second, continues the stylistic curiosity and investigation of the psychology of lopsided relationships evident within the previous films.  That series of faux internet video calls between two characters - played by Gilman and the ubiquitous Jennie - is perhaps Gilman's most widely seen work.  That is because one of the episodes is titled "bad webcam sex," and as recently as May 19, 2008, it is the second link to appear when one searches Google for "webcam sex."  Another Gilman internet art project is "Obey Saget," a variation on Shepherd Fairey's Andre the Giant-related artwork - except Gilman's features images of Bob Saget, and also generates random legends about Saget.  Gilman has also been much more open than Fairey in his attempts to capitalize financially on his project.  Two other Gilman internet projects are "TiFaux," a site commenting on contemporary television, and "Enclosure Flex," a podcast plugin for the Wordpress blogging platform.

Gilman is a member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild.  He works as an editor and title designer for hire; and has several proverbial projects in development.
