Best recognized as a regular actor in the work of Hal Hartley - with whom he has worked since 1998 - Mendel also performs frequently in the theater, and has directed a number of films. In the theater, he has worked several times with theatrical avant-garde legend Richard Foreman; after those collaborations, Foreman entrusted Mendel with the direction of Planet Earth: Dreams, a previously unproduced screenplay Foreman had written.
Mendel's other film work includes several roles in H.C.E., the 2006 masterpiece written and directed by Richard Sylvarnes; and in the title role of Charlie, which Mendel developed with his former student Salvatore Interlandi.
