D.J. Mendel

D.J. Mendel is a New York City based filmmaker and theatermaker.  Best recognized as a regular actor in the work of Hal Hartley - with whom he has worked since 1998 - Mendel also performs frequently in the theater, and has directed a number of films.  In the theater, he has worked several times with theatrical avant-garde legend Richard Foreman; after those collaborations, Foreman entrusted Mendel with the direction of Planet Earth: Dreams, a previously unproduced screenplay Foreman had written.

Mendel's other film work includes several roles in H.C.E., the 2006 masterpiece written and directed by Richard Sylvarnes; and in the title role of Charlie, which Mendel developed with his former student Salvatore Interlandi.  Mendel and Interlandi have also collaborated on the online video series Happy Birthday, Miss America
